Aerial operations and photogrammetry often take us to fascinating places. This time, we took our equipment to the Kolín region to the historic memorial of the Battle of Lipany. The result is not only a precise 3D model of the Lipany Mound but also a great experience in passing our know-how to the next generation.

When History Meets Modern Technology
The memorial on Lipská hora near the village of Vitice, commemorating the famous battle of 1434, is known to almost everyone from history textbooks. However, we looked at this place from a slightly different perspective—from a height of about 40 meters. Our goal was to create a detailed, interactive 3D model of the entire structure and the surrounding terrain.
But this mission was special in another way. Flying and data collection weren’t just about the final result this time.
Students and Hands-On Experience with Professional Equipment
A student from a technical high school reached out to me, looking for a meaningful internship in the field. Because I believe that passing on experience makes a lot of sense, I took him with me on this mission.
It was an ideal opportunity to show what working with advanced enterprise equipment entails in a real-world setting. In practice, we went through everything from pre-flight preparation, risk assessment, and airspace checks, to deploying the DJI Matrice 4T drone utilizing the RTK module for centimeter-level positioning accuracy. We also managed to cover the settings for Smart Oblique capture, which allows the drone to efficiently map a 3D object from all angles without wasting time or battery capacity.

Supporting the Region and Local Tourism
Because high-quality data shouldn’t just sit in a proverbial drawer, we decided to provide this 3D model completely free of charge to the Municipality of Vitice and the Local Action Group (MAS) Podlipansko.
We believe this visual material will enliven their web presentations, help promote our beautiful region, and perhaps attract more visitors to the Lipany Mound who want to remember a piece of our history.
